Jiu jitsu can be huge for an individual’s mental health. In the short term, the activity increases strength and flexibility, improves cardiovascular fitness and leads to a state of “runner’s high” through the release of endorphins and other “feel good” hormones. Over time, these adaptations can rebalance stress physiology and restore the dopaminergic, or rewards system, in the brain. Since these systems are often abnormal in individuals with mental illnesses, jiu jitsu is a fantastic means to treating mental health conditions and challenges.
While self-defense is the most obvious ability gained from jiu jitsu, the confidence that one gains from the activity can be applied to all aspects of life.

https://buildinghopesummit.org/Mission Building Hope Summit County is a community-wide initiative designed to create a more coordinated, effective and responsive mental health system that promotes emotional health, reduces stigma and improves access to care and support for everyone in Summit County. Story Building Hope was launched in 2016, after a rash of local suicides in Summit County. Among those was Patti Casey, a long-time and beloved Breckenridge resident with deep roots in the community. To honor her, Patti’s family created the Patti Casey Memorial Fund to provide the initial support for the Building Hope Initiative to honor Patti’s incredible spirit and kindness, and work to prevent the loss of others. Initially spearheaded by the organization’s first staff and director, Betsy Casey; community organizer, Gini Bradley and The Summit Foundation, as well as the FIRC (Family and Intercultural Resource Center). Building Hope has grown tremendously over the last several years and now includes support from Summit County Government, many local agencies and thousands of local residents.
